5-8"I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you're joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can't produce a thing. Anyone who separates from me is deadwood, gathered up and thrown on the bonfire. But if you make yourselves at home with me and my words are at home in you, you can be sure that whatever you ask will be listened to and acted upon. This is how my Father shows who he is—when you produce grapes, when you mature as my disciples.<br />
9-10"I've loved you the way my Father has loved me. Make yourselves at home in my love. If you keep my commands, you'll remain intimately at home in my love. That's what I've done—kept my Father's commands and made myself at home in his love.</span></em></p>

As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him.<br />
He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”<br />
They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?”<br />
“What things?” he asked.<br />
“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.&nbsp; Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.”<br />

While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.<br />
Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.<br />
“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”<br />

<p><span class="fontTahoma" style="color: #c3d69b;">Ash Wednesday is observed as the “official” beginning of the Lenten season, the weeks, or 40 days, of remembrance of Christ’s journey that lead to crucifixion and resurrection. It is often a time of heightened intention and attention through spiritual practices. We invite this kind of intention and attention in all of our days. Tonight, however, we invite you to consider your own desire for God and the great gift of friendship with God that we have been given through Christ.<br />
The cross is a symbol of God as love, a sign of God’s rescue of humankind from death and its domain, delivering us into life. Already done and accomplished, we are invited to turn away from our self as our savior and into God, in and through Christ, and the power and presence of the Holy Spirit as the One who saves, delivers, heals and restores into real life. We observe our own “death of self” and our own resurrection into true life in friendship with God. Ashes are a tangible mark of humility and recognition of our need and desire for God. We return to God for our life.</span></p>

<em>30 The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught. 31 Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat.<br />
32 So they left by boat for a quiet place, where they could be alone. 33 But many people recognized them and saw them leaving, and people from many towns ran ahead along the shore and got there ahead of them. 34 Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.</em></span></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #c3d69b;"><em>35 Late in the afternoon his disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. 36 Send the crowds away so they can go to the nearby farms and villages and buy something to eat.”<br />

“With what?” they asked. “We’d have to work for months to earn enough money[g] to buy food for all these people!”<br />
38 “How much bread do you have?” he asked. “Go and find out.”<br />
They came back and reported, “We have five loaves of bread and two fish.”<br />
39 Then Jesus told the disciples to have the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of fifty or a hundred.<br />
41 Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then, breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people. He also divided the fish for everyone to share. 42 They all ate as much as they wanted, 43 and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftover bread and fish. 44 A total of 5,000 men and their families were fed from those loaves!</em></span></p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><em><span style="color: #c3d69b;"><span style="font-family: trebuchet ms, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;">&nbsp;Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose and we have come to worship him</span><span style="font-family: trebuchet ms, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;">King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem. He called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of religious law and asked, “Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?” </span></span></em></p>

<p style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-family: tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;"><span style="color: #c3d69b;">Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. <sup>26</sup> It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. <sup>27</sup> Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, <sup>28</sup> Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:</span></span></i></p>

<p style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><b><span style="font-family: tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: #c3d69b;">The Birth of Jesus</span></span></b></p>
<p><span style="font-family: tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: #c3d69b;">&nbsp;<sup>18-19</sup>The birth of Jesus took place like this. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. Before they came to the marriage bed, Joseph discovered she was pregnant. (It was by the Holy Spirit, but he didn't know that.) Joseph, chagrined but noble, determined to take care of things quietly so Mary would not be disgraced. </span></span></p>
<p style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-family: tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: #c3d69b;">&nbsp;<sup>20-23</sup>While he was trying to figure a way out, he had a dream. God's angel spoke in the dream: "Joseph, son of David, don't hesitate to get married. Mary's pregnancy is Spirit-conceived. God's Holy Spirit has made her pregnant. She will bring a son to birth, and when she does, you, Joseph, will name him Jesus—'God saves'—because he will save his people from their sins." This would bring the prophet's embryonic sermon to full term: <br />
<br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Watch for this—a virgin will get pregnant and bear a son; <br />
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;They will name him Immanuel (Hebrew for "God is with us"). </span></span></p>
<p style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-family: tahoma, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: #c3d69b;">&nbsp;<sup>24-25</sup>Then Joseph woke up. He did exactly what God's angel commanded in the dream: He married Mary. But he did not consummate the marriage until she had the baby. He named the baby Jesus. </span></span></p>

1-2Watch what God does, and then you do it, like children who learn proper behavior from their parents. Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with him and learn a life of love. Observe how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn't love in order to get something from us but to give everything of himself to us. Love like that.</span></em></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em><span class="fontTahoma" style="color: #c3d69b;">3-4Don't allow love to turn into lust, setting off a downhill slide into sexual promiscuity, filthy practices, or bullying greed. Though some tongues just love the taste of gossip, those who follow Jesus have better uses for language than that. Don't talk dirty or silly. That kind of talk doesn't fit our style. Thanksgiving is our dialect.</span></em></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em><span class="fontTahoma" style="color: #c3d69b;">5You can be sure that using people or religion or things just for what you can get out of them—the usual variations on idolatry—will get you nowhere, and certainly nowhere near the kingdom of Christ, the kingdom of God.</span></em></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em><span class="fontTahoma" style="color: #c3d69b;">6-7Don't let yourselves get taken in by religious smooth talk. God gets furious with people who are full of religious sales talk but want nothing to do with him. Don't even hang around people like that.</span></em></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em><span class="fontTahoma" style="color: #c3d69b;">8-10You groped your way through that murk once, but no longer. You're out in the open now. The bright light of Christ makes your way plain. So no more stumbling around. Get on with it! The good, the right, the true—these are the actions appropriate for daylight hours. Figure out what will please Christ, and then do it.</span></em></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em><span class="fontTahoma" style="color: #c3d69b;">11-16Don't waste your time on useless work, mere busywork, the barren pursuits of darkness. Expose these things for the sham they are. It's a scandal when people waste their lives on things they must do in the darkness where no one will see. Rip the cover off those frauds and see how attractive they look in the light of Christ.</span></em></p>

34 After they had crossed the lake, they landed at Gennesaret. 35 When the people recognized Jesus, the news of his arrival spread quickly throughout the whole area, and soon people were bringing all their sick to be healed. 36 They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his robe, and all who touched him were healed.</span></em></p>

</strong>To Love, to Be Loved<br />
</span></span><em><span class="fontTahoma" style="color: #c3d69b;">17-18God is love. When we take up permanent residence in a life of love, we live in God and God lives in us. This way, love has the run of the house, becomes at home and mature in us, so that we're free of worry on Judgment Day—our standing in the world is identical with Christ's. There is no room in love for fear. Well-formed love banishes fear. Since fear is crippling, a fearful life—fear of death, fear of judgment—is one not yet fully formed in love.<br />
19We, though, are going to love—love and be loved. First we were loved, now we love. He loved us first.<br />
20-21If anyone boasts, "I love God," and goes right on hating his brother or sister, thinking nothing of it, he is a liar. If he won't love the person he can see, how can he love the God he can't see? The command we have from Christ is blunt: Loving God includes loving people. You've got to love both.</span></em></p>
