APRIL 2010

I am aware that there are many different responses to the season of Lent and the celebration of Easter joy. These responses are personal and individual and yet corporate in our worship expressions. It is a great relief to arrive on Easter Sunday and know that we celebrate LIFE. Death has lost its sting--Jesus Christ rose from the dead, is alive, as is our hope of salvation and life eternal as well. As Christians, the path into this new life follows the path of Jesus. When Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw it empty, her grief so deep and her being traumatized from witnessing Jesus' horrific death, she couldn't easily see or feel any kind of hope or revelation--until the living Christ spoke her name. Mary's relationship with Jesus, her love for Jesus and time spent with Jesus following him, prepared her to recognize his voice. His voice cut through her grief and trauma. Of course she wanted to cling to him.

It is hard to understand the betrayal, violence and cruelty that surrounded and took the life of Jesus, and yet I see often that same kind of violence, cruelty, deception and betrayal still at work today. What is the path of Jesus in it as we follow him? What is our invitation as we bear his name and partner with God in bringing redemption and restoration into our world? It may not be an easy path; it may many times be overwhelming or misunderstood.

Jesus came to bring God's message of hope and life, of truth, freedom and deliverance, of peace, love and compassion. When we take his name and life as ours, we take on and live his message as well. It is an intimate and vital relationship with Christ that sustains, empowers, encourages, guides. I invite you to make space in your everyday life for loving and listening to Jesus for him to show you the way.

Care of the Minister's Soul Leader's Day
A Day of Renewal and Conversation

These days are designed for Twin Cities Region Ministry Leaders: pastors, staffs, ministry leaders, missionaries, spouses and are structured around brief reflections on the leader's call to transforming encounter with God. Ample time will be offered for alone time, sharing time, reflecting, praying and rest. The day will close with communion.

In 2009 our shared days of renewal brought deep refreshment to many area leaders. The theme for our first gathering in 2010 is Courage and Call in Encounter. During group and personal time we'll reflect on biblical leaders in encounters with God that shape and empower inner lives and calling. We are eager to meet you in Aoril for this day of prayerful listening, rest, and sharing with fellow leaders. Come cultivate strength of soul--helping your life and ministry be a home to fullness in Christ.

Image management is an actual career today...people are paid to do this work. Though not all are paid, we all are image managers. We carefully select what we allow others to know about us. Why do we, in British author Susan Howatch’s words, create these “Glittering Images”? What is behind these images that cause us to be so fearful? In what kind of relationship is our true self safe and enjoyed?
During our time together we will reflect on Scriptures, the writings of John Ortberg, William Miller and spiritual director Joyce Rupp to help us “explore the inner terrain of our being.”

Ortberg writes in "Everyone's Normal Until You Get to Know Them," “Humility and trust are more at the foundation of community than perfection . . . each of us does his best to hide behind a shield . . . the irony is that we are drawn to people who live with unveiled faces.”
Join with us in this wonderful opportunity to explore your inner life terrain; join with others on the same journey into living true and authentically in your relationships and in your world.

Unveiled Faces will be facilitated by Jane Burg of Burg by Design. Jane is a spiritual director, speaker and teacher. She is the former Associate Dean of the Center for Personal and Spiritual Formation at Bethel Seminary and currently teaches Leadership and Marriage and Family courses at Crown College.
